Why is Reddit so Important for Social Listening Marketing?

Massive User Base

If you are not familiar with Reddit it is a massive social media site and one of the most popular on the Internet consistently.

Reddit posts are persistent because they are Indexed by Google

In our opinion Reddit is also one of the most important Social media sites to monitor for mentions because it is indexed by Google. Because of this it often shows up in Google search results and this can help drive massive traffic to your product (or devastate traffic if users see a negative post or comment about your product.

We are even seeing trends now where users will run google searches like `best vpn reddit` in order to get results on Reddit that they trust more than other sites.

Users trust information they read on Reddit

At its heart Reddit Is a platform for allowing users to easily create communities. Because of this it is one of the most trusted social media platforms.

People do not want to get a product recommend to them by some anonymous media company that was paid to review the product. They want to read real reviews and get recommended products by real people. Reddit helps facilitate this.

All of this together makes Reddit one of the most important social media platforms for you to monitor your brand and market your product on.

Speed is Important and Notifier Delivers>

Notifier is the fastest social listening tool for Reddit. This is important as it's been proven that the earliest comment on Reddit is the most up-voted one. Because of this it's very important that you respond early to customer feedback and mentions.

Notifier will match and alert you on average within 30 secs (many times faster) of the comment occurring on Reddit.

This is possible because of our custom parallel processing engine that we developed to scale it's processing power on demand.

No time to respond quickly yourself?

We get it! There's only so much time in the day and when you're building a new startup or product it can be hard to simply monitor your inbox constantly.

Because of that we are beta testing a new service where our trained representatives will handle the responses for you. For more information contact us at the chatbox below or email us at support@notifier.so

Now you need to choose when you want us to alert you for new Reddit matches.

Finally enter in the string that you would want to search for on Reddit.

We suggest everyone search for the following:

  1. Mentions of your own product/brand/startup
  2. Mentions of your competitors product/brand/startup
  3. Keywords that your potential customers might mention

Want more information on this including examples? See our article on What we Recommend Every Company Search for using Notifier

Finally, you just need to select certain Reddit specific options for your Searcher that will help you narrow down what you are searching for.

You can search for post, comments, or both.

You can include results only from certain subreddit's or you can exclude results from certain subreddits.

You can also ignore comments or posts from certain users. Many people use this to filter out replies by themself.

What is Reddit?

If you're not familiar with Reddit, it is a social news aggregation website that happens to be one of the most popular websites on the internet. In February 2021, Reddit was the 18th most visited website worldwide and the 7th most visited website in the US according to Alexa. Now, even though Reddit is called a social news aggregation website, at its heart, it's really a platform that makes it easy for users to create communities.

On Reddit, each community is called a Subreddit. You can access the Subreddits by going to the main page of Reddit and simply selecting one of the communities after you've signed up. You can also see Top News Communities such as r/UpliftingNews, r/news, r/worldnews and many others.

Reddit communities are prefixed with an r/. This relates to the fact that in order to get to that community and the URL, you have an r, slash, and the community name. For example, if we visit r/news, you're going to see in the URL bar www.reddit.com/r/news.

Reddit communities, overall, are known to be very anti-self-promotion and promotion of all types in general. Because of this, many people found it very difficult to use Reddit for marketing and self-promotion. Don't let that fool you though, as Reddit is simply one of the best platforms to market yourself on. The key thing to do though is to be honest, not overly self-promotional, and in general, to go to for the soft sell rather than the hard sell on Reddit. The fact is that, even though many successful marketers avoid Reddit, there are some products and companies that are making a killing off of using Reddit for marketing. And many of them are using Notifier to do so.

If you're looking for some general history about Reddit, it was founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman, Alexis Ohanian and Aaron Swartz.

How Reddit Works

One of the great things about Reddit is that you can actually use it without logging in. In fact, many of the readers of Reddit do not even have accounts on the side. Reddit is organized into separate communities called Subreddits.

If you go to the main page of Reddit, you will see a list of some of the popular posts. A Reddit post can be as simple as a link or a picture or it can be a text-based post that includes multiple different types of content. Here, we are browsing the front page of Reddit that simply lists popular posts on Reddit at a time. One very popular subreddits called wallstreetbets and if I click on the link, it will lead me to that subreddit.

Now, I'm viewing as an anonymous user of the most popular (Reddit calls it Hot) posts in this subreddit. When you are in a Subreddit, you can sort by the default which is the Hot posts or popular posts, you can also sort by New, Top posts or you can also filter by date and time so Today, This Week, This Month, This year or All Time.

Many people simply scroll through Reddit looking at the pictures or texts of the posts and never go any further. But, like a lot of different social media sites, the real value in Reddit, at least for a lot of users, is in the comments. Under each post, you can click on the Comments to see comments for that post. Even comments can be sorted and filtered and by default, often it's sorted by Best comments but you can also sort by Top comments which means upvoting or New comments, Controversial Comments, Old comments or Q&A.

Karma and Upvoting

One of the revolutionary features of Reddit, when it was originally launched, was the concept of upvoting and downvoting posts and comments based on the user's perception as to the value of those posts or comments. Before Reddit, this was not a common thing. In fact, in early 2000, the internet had forums so Reddit is essentially a massive internet forum site. And this concept existed, of course, in the early 2000 but on these forums (with IMDb community forums being a good example although the look has changed a lot since 2000), you would just have posts and the order would not be sorted based on an upvote.

It was just when the post occurred, that was the only way to view them. With Reddit though. this all changed and users are allowed to upvote and downvote posts that they think are the best. This is also true of comments so when you view the comment of a post, you will see the number of upvotes for that comment and the higher upvoted comments are the top comments. One interesting phenomenon with Reddit is that it's more often the case that the earlier comments are more likely to be the most upvoted ones.

Once the user does decide to sign up and create an account on Reddit, they will first need to enter their email and then choose a username. Reddit usernames can be pretty eclectic and often funny. Once you have a Reddit user account and username, you can then get Karma.

Karma is the point system that Reddit uses and you receive points by posting and getting upvotes on those points. You can also get upvotes for great comments and you receive Karma for that as well.
