Here at Notifier we know a thing or two about pizza!
Not only are we experts at eating them but we also occasionally make them! Here is actually one of our creations below:
In fact, if this whole software thing doesn’t work out there is a good chance we may pivot Notifier into a thin crust Gourmet Pizza or PaaS (Pizza as a Service) Startup.
I can see the tagline now actually…
“Get Notified When Pizzas You Care About are Delivered to Your Mouth”
Regardless, we know Pizza
One thing we didn’t know though was what night of the week is the most popular for Pizza Night!? It’s a question that humans have asked themselves for possibly millions (billions?) of years.
I mean common sense says it’s probably Friday but we (as a society) just have never known for sure!
That is, until Notifier came around…
We created a public Searcher for pizza night
We actually created a public Searcher for “pizza night”. You can actually see some of the hilarious results for it live. Don’t worry we will link to it again at the end of the article but here it is now also.
Before we get to our findings, let’s talk a bit about the history of pizza and pizza night
What is pizza?
Pizza comes in many different varieties. You have your deep dish, Chicago style, New York Style. You have thin crust, pan crust, hand-tossed crust, flavored crust, etc. You have pizzas loaded with meats, those covered in an array of veggies, or a mixture of both. Pizza night can include various types of cheeses and sauces, really there isn’t anything you can’t put on pizza dough. There’s even dessert pizzas such as cookie pizza or fruit pizza. The possibilities for pizza night are endless.
Pizza comes from Italy
Pizza got its start somewhere in the 1700s in Italy, and became popular in the United States in the 19th Century. The first pizzeria in the United States was opened in 1905 in New York City called Lombardi’s, and its founder, Gennaro Lombardi, is credited for creating New York-Style pizza. Today, the global pizza market has sales zeroing in on $145 billion, and pizza restaurants employ more than a million people in the United States alone.
Fun possibly false fact:
Julius Caesar actually said “Veni, Vidi, Pizzi” which is translated to, “I came, I saw, I pizza’d”
Pizza is kind of a big deal
In the United States, the average person eats 45-46 slices of pizza each year. Roughly 3 BILLION pizzas are sold annually. There are approximately 63,000 pizza restaurants in the USA. International Pizza Day is February 9. October is national pizza month in the USA. And while the weekend is the most popular time for pizza nights, there are five days throughout the year that pizza sales increase: Super Bowl Sunday, New Year’s Eve, Halloween, the night before Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day.
A Pizza must have toppings
Toppings are a big deal for those popular weekend pizza nights. Pepperoni gets the top spot for the most favorite topping. Other favorite pizza night toppings are: mushrooms, extra cheese, sausage, green pepper, and onion. Anchovies rank last for what people will put on their pizza. Meat toppings beat out veggie toppings for pizza night, and regular thin crust pizza wins as the most popular type of crust.
Now the results
So our searcher has only been running for a few weeks now but I think we have a clear winner even now…
