Tips for Posting on Reddit

Learn from successful founders and Reddit best practices to maximize your post engagement.

1 Join Conversations, Don't Self-Promote

OpenPhone's co-founder Daryna Kulya found success by monitoring relevant keywords and joining existing conversations naturally. Instead of cold posting, they responded to people asking questions about business communication tools. As Daryna said: "I set up alerts for relevant industry and competitor terms using Notifier for Reddit. This way, it was more natural for me to talk about OpenPhone as a solution."

Read more about how OpenPhone used Reddit and Notifier.so to find their first 1,000 customers →

2 Tell Your Story, Not Your Pitch

Reddit users, especially founders and entrepreneurs, want to hear authentic journeys. OpenPhone shared their challenges and learnings rather than product features. Create value by writing posts or articles that answer common questions in your industry.

3 Understand Each Subreddit's Culture

Before posting, spend time reading top posts and comments to understand the community's norms and rules. Each subreddit has its own culture—what works in r/Entrepreneur might not work in r/startups. Always read and follow the subreddit's posting guidelines to avoid removal.

4 Craft Compelling, Honest Titles

Your title is critical—make it clear, engaging, and authentic. Avoid clickbait at all costs. Provide a concise summary of what readers will get. Good examples: "How we got our first 100 customers using Reddit" or "I analyzed 10,000 posts to find the best time to post in r/weddingplanning"

5 Post at Optimal Times

Timing matters! Use the activity heatmap above to find when r/weddingplanning is most active. Generally, posting between 6:00-8:00 AM Eastern Time on weekdays catches both European and U.S. audiences. But every subreddit is different—check the data specific to your target community.

6 Format for Readability

Use headers, bullet points, and short paragraphs to make your post scannable. Include relevant images or videos when appropriate. Reddit supports markdown formatting—use it to structure your content with bold text, lists, and sections.

7 Engage After Posting

Don't post and ghost! Actively respond to comments and questions within the first hour. This interaction signals to Reddit's algorithm that your post is generating engagement, which can boost its visibility. Plus, it builds trust and shows you're genuinely interested in the conversation.

8 Use Appropriate Flair and Tags

Many subreddits require post flair to categorize content. Using the correct flair helps users find your post and shows you understand the community. Some subreddits won't even display your post without proper flair.

9 Build Credibility Over Time

Don't expect overnight success. Consistently share valuable content and engage respectfully to build reputation. OpenPhone spent months contributing to discussions before seeing significant results. A credible account with a history of helpful contributions will be received much better than a new account making its first post.

10 Monitor Adjacent Topics

OpenPhone didn't just monitor "business phone" keywords—they also tracked adjacent topics like "remote work communication" and "team collaboration." This broader approach gave them more opportunities to naturally contribute value. Think about related problems your audience has, not just direct product mentions.

💡 Pro Tip: Use Notifier.so to monitor relevant keywords in r/weddingplanning so you never miss an opportunity to join authentic conversations.

Guidelines: Detailed Guidelines in our Wiki here!

1. Constructive criticism & respect

  • Constructive criticism or disagreement is fine – judgmental and mean comments are not. Comments must be constructive and contribute to conversation. Name calling, abusive comments, idea bashing, budget-shaming, or arguing with other posters will not be tolerated. In this vein, we do not allow AITA / AITB posts here. Weddit is also gender & relationship diverse, so please keep that in mind when addressing posts!

2. Context

  • All posts must be directly related to your own wedding or your own personal experiences with weddings and planning. We encourage you to share location for any discussion of budget, etiquette, timeline, or other region-influenced topic for this international subreddit. We do not allow anniversary posts for inactive Wedditors, guest attire posts, or any allow medical advice posts or comments, including weight change and COVID19 decisions. We do not allow sharing your current / goal size or weight.

3. Text Only Tuesdays

  • Only text posts are allowed from 12 AM to 11:59 PM EDT on Tuesdays. All image/video only posts or posts that require images will be removed. Please feel free to post your pictures and videos - including engagement ring photos- any other day of the week! (Please note videos must be hosted on v.Reddit or Streamable).

4. No memes/funny gif posts:

  • /r/trollxweddings is a better place for these.

5. No bashing posts

  • We do not allow bashing posts such as "what's a tradition you hate?" or "what decor is overrated?” or "what are your unpopular wedding opinions". Weddit is made up a diverse group of people with diverse traditions. Treating the typical wedding in your area as THE right version of weddings is not cool. We should treat other weddings the way we want ours treated.

6. No 'tacky'

  • We generally don't allow the use of the word tacky here, including asking 'is this tacky'. 'Tacky' is subjective, not descriptive, and too often weaponized. Situations vary greatly, and there is no one sole arbiter of etiquette. We also don't allow debates on the etiquette of cash bars.

7. No Advertising, Market Research, or GoFundMe Links

  • No monetizing the subreddit. This includes but is not limited to: advertising, self-promoting, sharing your work, affiliate links, blogs/vlogs, market research / feedback solicitation, free giveaways. Coupons/discounts can be shared in the Daily Discussion Chat. We do not allow GoFundMe, vote solicitations, or other similar requests.
Vendor AMAs: Please contact the mods first for verification. Please note that you cannot advertise in your AMA.

8. Post multiple photos in an album, not as multiple posts

  • When sharing multiple pictures in a short period of time, please post them in an album/in the same post. Repeat or similar posts that do not uniquely contribute to discussion may be removed.

9. Privacy/identifying information

  • You may include your own names and faces at your discretion. Addresses and last names of other people must be obscured, and wedding website URLs are not allowed.

10. Don't share Weddit content elsewhere

  • No sharing other posts, pictures, etc from Weddit to other groups without the express permission of the original poster. Especially do not share to any shaming forums, or in order to be negative about or mock anyone.

11. Use that report button:

  • If you feel a post is in violation of any of the rules, or is inappropriate content, please click the report button underneath the post or comment.
