Tips for Posting on Reddit

Learn from successful founders and Reddit best practices to maximize your post engagement.

1 Join Conversations, Don't Self-Promote

OpenPhone's co-founder Daryna Kulya found success by monitoring relevant keywords and joining existing conversations naturally. Instead of cold posting, they responded to people asking questions about business communication tools. As Daryna said: "I set up alerts for relevant industry and competitor terms using Notifier for Reddit. This way, it was more natural for me to talk about OpenPhone as a solution."

2 Tell Your Story, Not Your Pitch

Reddit users, especially founders and entrepreneurs, want to hear authentic journeys. OpenPhone shared their challenges and learnings rather than product features. Create value by writing posts or articles that answer common questions in your industry.

3 Understand Each Subreddit's Culture

Before posting, spend time reading top posts and comments to understand the community's norms and rules. Each subreddit has its own culture—what works in r/Entrepreneur might not work in r/startups. Always read and follow the subreddit's posting guidelines to avoid removal.

4 Craft Compelling, Honest Titles

Your title is critical—make it clear, engaging, and authentic. Avoid clickbait at all costs. Provide a concise summary of what readers will get. Good examples: "How we got our first 100 customers using Reddit" or "I analyzed 10,000 posts to find the best time to post in r/FoodPorn"

5 Post at Optimal Times

Timing matters! Use the activity heatmap above to find when r/FoodPorn is most active. Generally, posting between 6:00-8:00 AM Eastern Time on weekdays catches both European and U.S. audiences. But every subreddit is different—check the data specific to your target community.

6 Format for Readability

Use headers, bullet points, and short paragraphs to make your post scannable. Include relevant images or videos when appropriate. Reddit supports markdown formatting—use it to structure your content with bold text, lists, and sections.

7 Engage After Posting

Don't post and ghost! Actively respond to comments and questions within the first hour. This interaction signals to Reddit's algorithm that your post is generating engagement, which can boost its visibility. Plus, it builds trust and shows you're genuinely interested in the conversation.

8 Use Appropriate Flair and Tags

Many subreddits require post flair to categorize content. Using the correct flair helps users find your post and shows you understand the community. Some subreddits won't even display your post without proper flair.

9 Build Credibility Over Time

Don't expect overnight success. Consistently share valuable content and engage respectfully to build reputation. OpenPhone spent months contributing to discussions before seeing significant results. A credible account with a history of helpful contributions will be received much better than a new account making its first post.

10 Monitor Adjacent Topics

OpenPhone didn't just monitor "business phone" keywords—they also tracked adjacent topics like "remote work communication" and "team collaboration." This broader approach gave them more opportunities to naturally contribute value. Think about related problems your audience has, not just direct product mentions.

💡 Pro Tip: Use Notifier.so to monitor relevant keywords in r/FoodPorn so you never miss an opportunity to join authentic conversations.

Community Rules & Guidelines

Want more posts with just OC? Try using the FILTER.

Please include text recipes in your comments, if possible.

Here’s a more concise and enforceable version of your rules:

Submission Rules

Rule 1 - Posts Must Be High-Quality Food Photography

  • All posts must be related to food photography. Low-effort images (poor lighting, bad plating, visible utensils, hands, or partially eaten food) will be removed. This is not a dumping ground for r/food content—make an effort.

Rule 2 - Only Single Images or GIFs Allowed

  • GIFs must comply with these rules.
  • No videos, collections, interactive images, or articles.

Rule 3 - Titles Must Include Context

  • Titles must include the dish name (e.g., "Antipasto with Parma ham, olives, gruyere cheese, and breadsticks").
  • Non-original content (non-OC) must credit the creator in the title.
  • If it's your image, tag it as [OC] in the title. Flair is also available.
  • Low-effort titles will be removed.

Rule 4 - Limit One Non-OC Post Per Day

  • You may post only one non-OC submission per day.

Rule 5 - Recipes Must Be in Plain Text

  • If including a recipe, post it as plain text in the comments. Links are allowed but must be accompanied by a full text version.

Rule 6 - Be Civil

  • Keep discussions respectful. Personal attacks, rudeness, and hostility will not be tolerated.
  • Hateful, rude, or antagonizing comments/posts will be removed, and users may be banned at the mods' discretion. Do not engage with trolls or gatekeep content.

Rule 7: High-Quality Food Only

  • Submissions must showcase visually appealing, well-prepared, and thoughtfully presented food. Simple or low-effort meals (e.g., plain breakfast cereal, frozen fish sticks on a plate, fast food in its packaging) are not allowed. Dishes should demonstrate effort in presentation, lighting, and composition. If in doubt, consider whether your submission could be featured in a professional food magazine or high-end restaurant menu.

If you are concerned that a post does not belong here, report the post or message the mods. Please allow some time for mods to attend to reports and modmail.
