Reddit enjoys several users who subscribe to many of Reddit’s numerous communities that discuss their interests. The users are often in multiple communities but tend to spend more time in some communities than others. Reddit recap is Reddit’s way of showing you where you spent most of your Reddit-browsing time within the past year and other interesting insights.
Other than the communities, the recap also displays the awards you got and how long your scrolling on the platform came to be in terms of bananas. In December, Reddit launched the 2021 Reddit Recap, offering users exciting stats accumulated across the year.
Using your Reddit Recap
You may visit the 2021 Reddit Recap page directly to see your personalized recap or look through your inbox for the direct link. If you enjoy Reddit via the mobile apps instead, you can click on your profile icon on the app and click the “Recap” bubble. You would need to update your app to the latest version to see it.
However, these links and features are currently unavailable as too much time has elapsed since December 2021. To enjoy Reddit Recap, you may have to wait till the same time later this year, when Reddit releases the 2022 edition.
What does a Recap contain?
There are about 12 information points that your recap will show you, with respect to the information that it collected all year. The recap cuts off on November 30 of that year, so information beyond then will not count. These points include
- The new subreddits you joined;
- How much scrolling you have done in terms of bananas lying end to end;
- What community you made popular;
- What popular community you started participating in;
- How long you used on Reddit Public Access Network;
- The popular posts that you upvoted before anyone else;
- The karma you got;
- Where you received most of the karma;
- Your post with the most upvotes;
- Your comment with the most upvotes;
- Number of awards you got; and
- The communities you stayed in the most.
One of the most popular activities on Reddit last year was the Gamestop phenomenon of early 2021. GameStop, a video game retailer based in the United States, grew by over 700% during an attention-drawing period at the end of January. GameStop had been at the end of several short-selling as many investors expected its value to reduce across the coming days.
As Redditors and other retail traders noticed GameStop, they also noticed how significantly shorted the stock was. In response, several members of the WallStreetBets community began buying GameStop shares. As a result, it became a trending Reddit stock, with its value rising quickly. As a result, GameStop’s value increased by more than 8000 percent across a six-month period. Its shares consequently went from trading at around $43 to as much as $380, resulting in it being one of the highest traded stocks on the market.
This activity resulted in the most upvoted post on Reddit of all time, Titled “Times Square right now,” it featured a digital billboard on Times Square that said, “GME go BRRRRR.” The video currently stands at 466,000 upvotes and more than 13,000 comments.
Creating an account on Reddit
The best way to enjoy Reddit Recap is by creating an account and surfing its many contents. You can create an account with your Google account, Apple ID, or email. One key difference between both is that creating an account with your Google account or Apple ID will see Reddit give you a randomly assigned username which you can change within 30 days before it gets permanent. On the other hand, you get to select your username when you open the account with your email. The username you select will be your permanent username.
To create the account, go to Reddit.com and click “Sign up” at the top right corner. This will direct you to an interface where you select whether to use your Apple ID, Google account, or email address. Choosing your Google account or Apple ID will require you to log into either account. This will automatically create an account for you.
On the other hand, you can enter your email address, and you would enter a username and password of your choice. There will be suggested usernames that you can leverage instead of racking your brain for one. After entering your select username and password, simply click sign up to create your account.
You should note that Reddit has an age limit, and users below 13 years are not permitted to create an account on the platform.
How to join a community on Reddit
One of the several information points that Reddit recap reports are the new communities you joined within the relevant period. As a result, here is how to join a community on Reddit. One of the fastest ways to join a community is by searching for it via the search box and visiting the community. The search bar is usually consistent in its location across all Reddit platforms except the mobile website, where you need to tap the three-line icon at the top right to reveal the search bar.
Simply input the community you want to join in the search bar and click on it when it appears; this will take you to the community’s homepage. Simply click “Join” on the community’s homepage to join the community, and you will continue to receive content from the community on your feed.
Generally, reddiquette (Reddit etiquette) demands that users should be civilized in their interactions and remember that there is always another human on the other side of the screen. Furthermore, Reddit frowns at trolling and spam, only tolerating self-promotion in moderation. As pointed out, most communities have rules, and members can be punished via post removal, bans, or suspensions if they flout them.
Just like Reddit Recap reports on your activities on the platform across the year, you can also leverage Notifier, our social listening tool, to observe the activities of others. The tool lets you know when community members mention key phrases or keywords on the platform.
