There are several functions on Reddit that help to improve user experience on the platform. For example, Reddit gives users an excellent range of customization options when making posts or comments, including quoting, crossing through, super scripting, and hyperlinking, among others. This article will focus on hyperlinking and teach you how to employ this feature in your everyday Reddit use.
Hyperlinking your post or comment on Reddit has several functions that make it a vital asset. You can use it to give your post more flavor by referring to an external source or comment. Likewise, it helps to reduce the length of your posts, as hyperlinking a word enables you to avoid pasting the full link on your post. Another importance is that it helps to prevent your posts from looking clumsy due to adding several characters of links in your post.
Without further ado, here is how to hyperlink your posts and comments across various Reddit platforms:
Desktop website
There is no automatic way to hyperlink your posts or comments on the desktop version of Reddit, so you have to do it manually. The first step is identifying the post or comment you want to respond to with the quote. After that, click on “reply” below the post, among other options, including “Reply,” “Give Award,” “Share,” “Report,” “Save,” and “Follow.”
Clicking on reply will reveal the text box for you to reply to the comment. Under the textbox, you will find a series of formatting tools to help you format your post. The hyperlinking icon is represented as an interlinking chain; click on it. This will display two boxes, one for you to input the word or group of words you want to hyperlink, and the other for you to paste the link. After entering the word, phrase or sentence you intend to hyperlink and the link, click “Insert,” and this will automatically enter the hyperlinked word or phrase into the text box.
Mobile app
Hyperlinking a post also works very similarly on the mobile app version of Reddit. As explained earlier, once you identify the post you want to comment on, click “Reply” below the post to reveal the comment box.
Right above the comment box, you will find the hyperlink icon; click on it. This will display two boxes, one for you to input the word or group of words you want to hyperlink, and the other for you to paste the link. After entering the word, phrase or sentence you intend to hyperlink and the link, click “Add link.” This will automatically enter the hyperlinked word or phrase into the text box. The text box will include the link as a bracket behind the text, as the hyperlink feature only activates upon posting.
Other than hyperlinking your posts, Reddit also offers different exciting formatting options. For example, Reddit also allows you to quote a post or comment – or a specific part of it – in your comment. Here is how to quote another user’s post on different Reddit platforms:
Desktop browser
There is no automatic way to quote a user’s posts or comments on the desktop version of Reddit, so you have to do it manually.
You can do either of the following steps before the other, nevertheless, go to the section you want to quote on the comment and copy it as you would any other text on your PC.
After that, click on the three-dot icon below the textbox next to other formatting tools, and this would reveal other options, including the icon for quoting, which is represented by one-half of the pair of quotation marks “. Clicking on this icon will bring up a small segment in the text box where you can paste the text you copied earlier to quote. The small segment will begin with a small vertical grey line where your quoted text will appear.
After the line has appeared, simply paste the text you have copied, which you want to quote, into the area directly in front of the grey line. After quoting the relevant text, you may also want to include your insight as well as the reason for quoting the text. You can do this either by clicking the ‘Enter” button on your PC thrice or simply directing your cursor out of the quoted segment of the text bar.
After expressing yourself in the text box and ensuring that what you have typed correctly passes your intention, click on “Reply” to reply to the comment with your quotes.
Alternatively, a much simpler way is to highlight the relevant section you intend to quote as if to copy it, then click on “Reply.” This will automatically create the quoted segment behind the grey line and input the highlighted text behind it.
Mobile app
Quoting a comment on the Reddit mobile app is similar to the old Reddit design; however, copying text takes a much different approach. After identifying the comment, you intend to reply to and quote from, click on the three-dot icon among the icons below the post. This will reveal several options, including “Share comment,” “Subscribe to comment,” “Save comment,” etc. Click “Copy text” below “Save comment” to copy the text.
After this, quoting the text is similar to the Reddit old design; you need to input the “>” where you want to place the quoted text. After you input it, paste the text you want to quote that you have copied. You can use the enter key to enter a new (regular) paragraph where you can discuss your insights or why you have quoted the text. After entering your comments, click on reply to send the comment.
