Reddit is a popular social media platform with hundreds of millions of users and engaging and often addictive content. This addictive nature typically sees many users stay up late on Reddit, straining their eyes in the process. Responding to user needs, Reddit released its night mode version to help users reduce the strain on their eyes at night. This article is for you if you are one of such night Reddit browsers and need to turn on night mode to save your eyes.
Reddit introduced the night mode in 2018, after several years of requests by Redditors. Night mode essentially switches Reddit’s regular white background to a more visually safe dark one. Users on the mobile apps can also select what flavor of night mode they want, switching between the tad brighter “Night” and very black “Midnight (AMOLED).”
Night mode on desktop Reddit
To active night mode on your Reddit account via Reddit’s desktop website, the first step is to locate the dropdown icon next to your username icon at the top right corner of the screen. Clicking on the dropdown will reveal a series of links, including your “online status,” your profile, and a link to your avatar. Below these links is the option for dark mode. Simply click on the toggle next to “Dark mode” to activate it.
Night mode on the mobile apps
On the Reddit mobile app, you can activate night mode by clicking your image icon at the top right corner of the screen to begin. This will reveal a panel that displays “my profile,” “create a community,” and others. Click on “Settings” at the bottom of the panel.
Under settings, scroll to the dark mode section and click on the toggle next to the “Dark Mode” option. If you use an iOS device, you can get on Night mode if you select the “Automatic (follow iOS setting) and then activate dark mode on your phone. This setting allows your iOS device’s light or dark mode to override your Reddit setting.
As explained earlier, you can also set the flavor of your night mode depending on how dark you want it to be. Simply click on “Dark theme” to select whether you want the “Midnight(AMOLED)” or the “Night” flavor.
Night mode on the mobile website
You can also activate night mode if you enjoy Reddit via the mobile website platform. You can do this by clicking on the three-line icon on the top right corner of your screen. It will reveal a panel that discloses your user name, link to your inbox, coins, premium, powerups, and your communities. Under these, you will find “settings.” Clicking on this will subsequently reveal a dropdown, including “dark mode,” “ask to open app,” “language,” and “request desktop site.” Click the check box next to “Dark mode.”
The feature is not available on the old Reddit design. You may have to sign up for the new design to enjoy the functionality. You can switch from the old design on the homepage. There is a “get new Reddit” link at the extreme top left corner of the screen. Clicking on it will return you to the new Reddit.
You can also take the longer route to the new design by clicking on “Preferences” at the top right corner of your screen. The window you arrive at will have several options at the top, including “option,” “apps,” “RSS,” “feeds,” “friends,” “blocked,” “password/email,” and “delete.” Select “option” and scroll down to personalization options. Here, simply toggle the “Use new Reddit as my default experience” switch and click on “save options.”
It is essential to note that night mode is only available for users who are logged in. As such, visitors who do not have an account may be unable to enjoy night mode unless they sign up.
How to sign up for Reddit
You can create an account with your Google account, Apple ID, or email. One key difference between both is that creating an account with your Google account or Apple ID will see Reddit give you a randomly assigned username which you can change within 30 days before it gets permanent. On the other hand, you get to select your username when you open the account with your email. The username you choose will be your permanent username.
Changing your randomly assigned username on the Reddit desktop website is easy. First, you locate the dropdown icon at the top right corner of the screen, next to your username icon. Clicking on the dropdown will reveal a series of links, including your “online status,” your “profile”, and a link to your avatar. Select “Your profile.” Ideally, you will get a pop-up requesting that you update your username. Click “Change Username.” Input the username you prefer, ensuring it is between three and 23 characters. Select “Continue” once you are done inputting the username
To create the account, go to Reddit.com and click “Sign up” at the top right corner. This will direct you to an interface where you select whether to use your Apple ID, Google account, or email address. Choosing your Google account or Apple ID will require you to log into either account. This will automatically create an account for you.
Before creating an account and logging in to the platform, users only enjoy posts from two Reddit communities; r/All and r/Popular. r/all collates the popular posts from most of Reddit. To prevent manipulation, the exact method for determining how a post gets picked up by r/all is unknown. However, the essential factors are the post’s age and score.
On the other hand, you can enter your email address, letting you enter a username and password of your choice. There will be suggested usernames that you can leverage instead of racking your brain for one. After entering your select username and password, simply click sign up to create your account. Furthermore, Reddit has an age limit, and users below 13 years may not create an account on the platform.
