Video
Here is a quick Instagram video I made that you can watch to get an idea of what I’m talking about in this article.
I do suggest you read the entire article though because I have a lot of further examples which may help give you ideas of what you need to do.
1. Never post a link to your Product
Avoid posting direct links to your product on Reddit unless someone specifically requests it. If you mention your product at all, stick to just the name without including any links. Nothing will get you banned faster than spamming links across Reddit – I learned this lesson the hard way in the early days. 🤣
Examples:
Notice here that I didn’t even mention our product name, I just said our platform. I also truly wanted more feedback from this guy about what he was doing so I could find out if this was a feature we could add to Notifier. 👆
Now, this is an interesting one because I am both giving value and marketing my product at the same time: You see Daryana’s excellent article and video she made on how they got their first 1000 customers mentions Notifier, but it’s also fantastic overall advice on how to bootstrap product from the ground up.
Notice in this image above how I casually mentioned Notifier, but I did not include a link.
This one above is probably the most blatant that I ever get when marketing on Reddit. It does work, but you have to be careful with this approach. Notice though that I did not include a link.
Notice in this one, of course, that I did not mention the name Notifier. I just said what it does and how we use it and get value out of it.
Above is another example of mentioning both Notifier and Stammer without including links to the products.
2. Setup Your Reddit Profile with Links to Your Product
Definitely make sure you fully fill out your Reddit profile. The key here is to include links to your products in the social links area. You can use the custom link functionality to do this.
And then also make sure your tagline or about section as they call it is filled out with mentions of your product like I do.
Now one key thing I do recommend here is don’t just include the name of your product. Include at least one short tagline of what it does to provide value to your ideal customer just like I do here.
3. Use your real name and face on Reddit
I highly recommend using your real name and profile photo on Reddit. This simple strategy helps you stand out from the crowd since so few people take this approach, and it instantly makes you appear more legitimate and trustworthy.
As you can see from my profile, I use my actual name and the same profile photo across all my social platforms. (Though I should probably update that photo soon!)
This authentic approach to your Reddit presence can significantly boost your credibility when engaging with communities and sharing your expertise.
4. Provide as much real value as you can
When marketing on Reddit, you need to fundamentally shift your approach. Focus on providing genuine value in all your comments and posts.
Luke made an excellent point on Twitter about being a community contributor who happens to have a business, rather than a business owner who posts. This distinction is crucial. The most successful Reddit marketers consistently create valuable posts in relevant communities, sharing their knowledge and insights rather than promoting their products.
