It’s entirely possible she put on mass in her upper body and lost it elsewhere. As a female crossfitter I’ve maintained pretty much the same weight +\- 5 lbs for the last five years - but I had to get rid of a lot of non-stretch tailored clothing like blazers that I owned. I would have split them down the seams if I tried to wear them. It is possible for women to build a larger upper body doing casual CrossFit.

There’s so many types of yoga to try though! Hatha, yin, and restorative are slower but vinyasa, power core and Ashtanga are killers. You should check out the Down Dog app, it’s pretty solid for beginners. There are also a lot of fitness trainers on YouTube that incorporate dumbbells and high resistance stuff but if you’re looking for a high impact, calorie burning CrossFit type of workout, yoga is definitely not it. Yoga is more about breath, movement, proper form, mental strength, and mind..the physical benefits are just an added bonus. I do admit the first few sessions are ASS but one day, something just clicks. Your body and mind align and really feel like you’re flowing. Mentally, yoga really helped me deal with the nature of this disease, be a better person, and clear the cobwebs in my mind. Physically, I’m super flexible, toned, have great posture, and no longer deal with joint or back pain. Win win!

Abby has the body type of a woman who works out a lot and is a professional soldier in a time where being good a melee is as important as firearms. Just google "female crossfit competition" all those women are even more buff than abby. Heck I'd say she is less buff than every powerlifter I've ever seen.

Just when you thought CrossFit ridiculousness had peaked at “speed squatting”, it gives us “treadmill wind sprints military press” and “balance ball hang cleans” - cause fuck your spine!

I love checking my Now Playing history after a CrossFit class to see what that pumping song was and I can thumbs-up it right from the history page which is awesome.

Does anyone else get very tired after intense workouts (especially in the morning)? I have been trying to work out in the mornings because everyone says that it makes you energized for the day... but intense workouts, especially in the mornings, just leave me exhausted, weak, and like I need to take a 3 hour nap. I am talking about workouts like crossfit, orange theory, tennis, etc. Is my body just meant to do lower intensity workouts? Should I keep forcing myself to do these hard workouts if I feel like garbage after? Does anyone else feel this way?

Firstly, I appreciate the support and the conversation! A lot of summaries get made over my stance on things and they are about half right, half the time, so I figure I'll chime in. Never said arching in the bench is bad. Excessive arching dramatically decreases how effective benching is as a developmental exercise and cartoonish arches work against the spirit of the sport as a test of strength, which merits a discussion about limits (just like there limits on grip width, hitching, etc to preserve that spirit). But I'm a strongman! If it's allowed in the rules and it gives you an edge, it is your obligation to exploit it as much as you can. Also, I've seen this posted numerous times from Wendler stans (btw, I generally like Wendler), so I want to address it: to suggest that someone is obligated to read the entire history of publications of an author to review a single published work is absolutely absurd and irrational. Authorities change their approaches and ideas over time, which is expected, but anyone purchasing a single copy of 5/3/1 will run it as written without the influence of every single post Wendler made thereafter. As long as he has those editions up for sale in their current form, without revision, I stand by every review I've made so far. Now, I definitely make mistakes and have oversights; to cite Gell-Mann amnesia you must think pretty poorly of my fact checking or basic reading comprehension. I would actually be very interested in a list of factual errors I made in assessing either of Jim's books (errors in representing the content of the books, not dis-continuity with a tweet he made 8 years later). As far as sumo goes, reducing it to an issue of ROM is overly-simplistic. "Easier" is not the word, it's a more advantaged setup for everyone (but you won't get good unless you train it) but hyper-selects for very specific builds that can exploit it to an absurd degree. It's not an opinion, it's statistically verifiable. The top 5 deadlifts done in a raw full meet are Benni's conventional 1015 (at 380 body weight) followed by FOUR sumo pullers in the 220s and 242s. Notice, that would never happen in a bench press, overhead press, squat, clean and jerk, snatch, stone load, yoke carry (or a conventional deadlift!). Somewhere, strength is taking a big damn back seat which brings up a philosophical question about the spirit of the sport (which, of course, there will never be a unanimous agreement on). For those who give undue reverence to sumo pulling, just know that it's introduction into powerlifting 50 some years ago was controversial then as well; some big names had an issue with it. Conventional deadlifts are done by a wide variety of competitors; bodybuilders, olympic lifters, strongmen, crossfit, field athletes, recreational lifters. Sumo is particular to powerlifting. Don't make the mistake of thinking that because it flies in one sport (which isn't the oldest or most popular anyhow) that it's role as a developer or test of strength is or should be beyond question. \*It's worth noting that, though I think my opinion is based on experience and a logically sound premise, 'sumo in powerlifting' ranks about a 3/10 on the passion scale. I expend more anger when the Mcrib goes off the menu. For the comment about odd lifts, we are talking about 2 different things. Strongman is comprised of awkward implements and the event is simply about getting from point A to point B by any means necessary. It's fun, yeah, but it is also a very real-world test of strength and utility AND training directly increases capacity, agility and strength through the posterior chain. The odd lifts are set, arbitrary ways to lift the same implement. I see them as obnoxious variations that do a worse job of testing strength or developing lifters than the primary ones while also serving as a distraction to new lifters who romanticize thier historical role. You can think model Ts are neat, but there's a reason they don't get made anymore. When I think of the people who get sucked into odd barbell lift meets, it reminds me of white belts who end up in classes where they work on their Chi because of their limited notion of what martial arts should be, when they would be infinitely better off just doing some punching and kicking drills. \*This one I do hate. Odd barbell lifts are a solid 9/10 on hills I will die on. Please don't take these posts as saltiness. I enjoy these discussions and this is currently serving as my current form of procrastination from the other content I'm supposed to be making right now!

**How did your 21.2 go and what did you learn from it?** Some members of Iconic Fitness in Dubai Marina recently completed the CrossFit open workout 21.2. And as Rehab Coach, I was asked, “Why is my hips and back in bits and what do I need to change in my workout approach in the future?” 21.3 is just a few days away and many of us who completed all those snatches and burpees over the weekend can finally start tying our own shoe laces again. If you got away without any scars then you’ve pretty much done each and every rep close to perfect. This is due to your hard work in preparation, well done! For those of us who are in agonizing pain its worth taking an in depth look at why we are all so badly off. Here’s the workout: Before I start analyzing the workout here is some pointers on your normal mechanics in any workout in general: Your body always tends to follow where you are looking, so if you look down to pick up the dumbbell; your body wants to naturally bend over. This creates a rounded back and higher hips, so less drive through your posterior chain. Your lower back works at a mechanical disadvantage, some lower back muscles have to perform 3-5 kg of force to lift 1 kg of effort, performing incorrect movements through the lower back will further increase this disadvantage ratio. The stiffness after this workout wasn’t so much about the heavy weight, we’ve had many 1st time openers tackling the prescribed weights, it’s was more about the amount of possible incorrect reps you accumulated. All the movements in this workout are completely natural and your body can perform them many times over and over when conditioned correctly. It’s very possible that you could have done well over 500 incorrect movements during these 20 minutes, and here’s how… Let’s start looking at the workout movements: Burpee – as you are bending downwards to place your hands on the floor you are performing hip flexion to hip extension to kick your legs out. Both are back associated movements. Whilst completing the push up during the upward phase, you shoot from hip extension into hip flexion and then hip extension standing up. 1 rep has a 4 movements that directly target the lower back and hips. Also your pushing your lower back a considerable distance when going from 2 opposing movements directly towards each other. Let’s not forget that last push up in the burpee that will typically be hyper extended as you fatigue in the 2nd half of the workout. It’s this hyper extended position where most athletes load the spine more then necessary. You are doing 75 burpees, that’s 75 x 4 aggressive hip movements = 300 lower back and hip movements. Box Jump – lowering the hips to prepare for the jump is a hip flexion movement, here it’s not as deep as with the burpee as you are looking up and not down, but you are going into a very quick and powerful jumping action that needs hip extension at speed. 75 box jumps + the burpees are 375 reps that target the lower back and hips. Most athletes relax the abs when landing and jumping from the box. You need to keep that core tight to further protect the spine and back. I’ve seen many athletes also leaning forward when stepping off the box due to fatigue, that places additional effort on the back erector muscles. 1 arm snatches – starting with the weight on the floor preparing for a snatch you are in hip flexion position. As you stand up you enter hip extension with the weight overhead. Here we have an external weight traveling the furthest possible distance from ground over head with a straight arm, so this increases the mechanical load considerably on the whole body, cleaning the weight up to the shoulders for instance would be traveling a smaller distance with less effort. Imagine how much effort tall athletes have to put in on lifting a weight off the floor with a straight arm overhead. The movement from ground to overhead is a very fast movement typically so once again we are moving the back from flexion to extension with power and speed, so that’s extra effort on the smaller back muscles. From ground to overhead and back to the ground its 2 hip and back associated movements per 1 snatch rep. You’re doing 150 snatches during this workout. Typically as you fatigue you will be bending less in the hips as you are looking down at the weight and your posture starts couching forward. This results in you reaching over to the dumbbell with an elaborate C-curve in the spine and not a straight back as you should. If you can just keep your chest up, look slightly forward rather than downwards you will already save yourself a lot of pain. With fatigue setting in most athletes also tend to lift the dumbbell further away from their bodies in an arch movement instead of keeping it close to the hips, this also increases the mechanical load on back and spine the further the dumbbell travels away from the body. Snatches, box jumps and burpees add to well over 500 flexion and extension movements that directly target the lower back and hips and can easily be done incorrectly when you are fatigued, rushed and not engaging the core. Here’s what you can include in your warm up to prepare a bit better next time: Posterior chain – PVC / bar good mornings, Romanian deadlifts, kettlebell sumo squats, super mans and ring rows. Shoulders, chest, and arms – inch worms with an elaborate pressing through the shoulders and the end of the worm to get the head through, bar overhead presses. Core and hips – planks, hollow rock holds, 1 arm kettle bell swings, 1 arm kettlebell snatches. Breathing – 5 minutes breathing exercises with an activated core and abs is essential. When you breath through your abs during this workout you will protect your spine by creating intra-abdominal pressure. This pressure eventually runs lower as you fatigue throughout the second part of the workout you will start breathing through your chest and this takes some protection away from your spine. Keeping the core engaged while jumping onto and from the box will also protect the spine and back muscles. You don’t have to be a good athlete to enjoy the open, all you need to be is….just be prepared. Here is a very handy back mobility sequence with 3 exercises you can do to get movement going again. Movement heals! Try it out! The smaller back muscles are being guarded and may be slightly traumatized. Are you suffering from persistent back pain and discomfort? That’s dope to hear. I was gonna recommend CrossFit since it blends using resistance training and uptempo activity. It seems like you hate stillness and some martial arts can be static so you’ll get bored —> angry. CrossFit forces me to be in the moment and I don’t have time to slow down. Good luck finding what helps you be who you want to be!

I, too, am an exercise addict, but about a year ago I started experiencing extreme fatigue with my normal muscle soreness and stiffness. I enjoyed HIIT, CrossFit and heavy lifting 6 days/week. I was diagnosed with RA this past July and was completely shocked. I honestly thought it was thyroid issues, but that was all fine. They put me on Hydroxychloroquine, and it hasn’t quite kicked in so I still have difficulties with working out. I haven’t stopped, but I have far less energy and my workouts are much less intense. It’s been a battle mentally, but I’m hopeful I’ll get back to where I used to be.

Hey everyone. I registered to take an in person Crossfit level 1 course for this weekend, but due to a family medical emergency, I am unable to know whether or not I'll be able to attend. I have already paid the fee and want to take the course. Is it possible to reschedule the class? There's another one coming up the first part of October that I could attend. Any help would be appreciated!

There are a few different ways you can handle it for sure, I would recommend checking out some of the gurus of mobility (Aaron horschig squat\_university, Joe Defranco with Limber 11, kneesovertoesguy -has hip/hammy mobility as well as ankle/knee, and although I'm not the biggest fan of Crossfit due to some of the mainstream lack of form control, Kelly starrett's supple leopard is excellent)

I'd often fall asleep to Netflix or YouTube. Taskmaster and The Big Flower Fight are my latest comforting, funny, and low-stakes shows. I run or do CrossFit to wear myself out during the day. I also have melatonin and SoundSleep, recommended by my therapist, to take as needed. Progressive muscle relaxation occupies your mind and relaxes your body, and if you can't stay focused on your own, there are lots of audio guides online.

I current have a ForeRunner 935, and looking to upgrade to get some of the newer tech like oxygen levels. I do a little of everything, strength training, CrossFit, running, swimming, cycling, but nothing as much as marathons or triathlons. I’m currently comparing the Fenix 5x plus or Fenix 6 mainly because of the deals right now. Help :)

Problem with CrossFit is that they always blame injuries on poor technique, when, to be honest, the volume is a huge contributing factor. My advice to you is to stop doing the ski erg. You will keep damaging your body by doing the ski erg. I mean you could really work on your form but there is something about the machine and positioning that is causing pain. You could work on mobility for years and the erg may still cause you pain. .Case in point: My deadlift form is nearly perfect but I still get nerve pain shooting down my left leg after heavy deadlifting or high rep deadlifts. So i just stopped doing them. Best decision of my life. I spent like 3 years working on stabilizer muscles.... working out weaknesses and imbalances.... strengthening my lats and perfecting my form, etc... My body is just not really fit for heavy deadlifts. Maybe it's a previous injury or whatever. But don't try to diagnose for too long... there are a million movements that will keep you fit. Avoid the ones that injre your body. Period.

I’m dealing with this right now but I can’t work out because of my heart rate. I was just diagnosed in March and while my heart rate is back down to a normal resting range when I work out my heart rate goes up to between 120 and 150 which I know is pretty normal. After however I have heart palpitations for a day or two. I want to work out but I’m afraid of damaging my heart. I used to work out 5-6 days a week doing a CrossFit style work out now I don’t do anything. Any suggestions on what to do to keep myself active because I know it’ll help with my mental health issues that are due to graves but can’t do anything too intense

>I'm a level 2 CrossFit instructor. But most recently it was in a Garage Strength YouTube video. So the CrossFit certifications taught you this? What are the prerequisites for level 2 cf? Also, I don't know garage strength, is that a level 3 instructor or something?

Her weight hasn't changed, so she hasn't put on mass. Perhaps she has lowered her body fat percentage which makes her shoulders look more prominent. I think for a lot of women, there is a perception that crossfitters are very muscular, which is a body image they may not prefer. This is prob caused by competitive crossfit athletes. The general crossfit programming you do at a box won't give you a body like that and isn't conducive to putting on mass.

I do weightlifting in a CrossFit gym and I feel like double unders are the biggest try hard thing ever. They even edge out walking hand stands.

What is that saying, something like the best day to start was yesterday, the 2nd best day is today? I didn't start CrossFit until age 52, now at age 57 I'm stronger than I've ever been (and just hit a deadlift PR at 405 this morning!).

I think I know that dude. He also side-gigs repairing windshields and instructing at the local Crossfit injurynasium.

Eu acho que é bem isso da mentalidade da academia! Por algum tempo os praticantes de crossfit aqui da minha região eram quase que uma religião também.

My partner is at a Crossfit gym. You start off doing six sessions one on one with an instructor before they let you loose into the gym. That way they show you the techniques and the do's and don'ts to avoid injury.

Sadly, I think the online community (as a whole.... forums, Reddit, etc.) have all lost a lot of civility over the last 10+ years. I used to be a multiple times daily user of a number of forums. Over time though, it seemed as though people lost their self-control and couldn't stand to let a post go by without criticism, outright bullying and so on. Another example is one of the the expat forums. You can't even ask a question on that forum without people giving you 5 pages of criticism (which they deem as hysterical) but when you really want/need an answer. As hit happens, just this morning one of the CrossFit groups I'm a member of on FB sent out a message asking some of the male members (not a pun) to please not resort to creepy, gross and/or critical comments each and every time a woman posts a photo. WTF people? When did that sort of behavior become 'normal' and/or commonplace? Just wow! So, in short, in spite of the polarization of the public due to COVID and all that surrounds it, I tend to feel as though people here are pretty well behaved.

I would find your maintenance calories first which you can find by searching maintenance calculator on google. Depending on volume and what intensity strength work you doing as well then you can figure if you need to add 200-400 calories and restructure your macros a bit. But I’ve had the best success when I have to surplus on calories by upping my intensity and strength work and keeping my mono conditioning to anaerobic as much as possible but it’s hard to balance it all with CrossFit if you have a full time job. Main thing is eat lean meat and Whole Foods and try to stay within your maintenance calorie window and get healthy filling carbs and steer clear of bread.

People and their concerns, which often feels, minimizing? trolling? My partner is great, I love him but give me the power to not absolutely lose it when he mansplains things he (1) doesn't really know about, (2) I pay a professional for. There was a video of me log clean & pressing on Instagram very briefly. I lower the weight from overhead, and to floor (this is often required in competition + good practice in control). My partner sees video and responds with "I guess the only thing I would say is that you should just drop it from mid so you don't risk tearing your bicep." While he does know how to clean, he's self taught and never worked with a coach, ever. I learned to clean at Crossfit (so, with a coach) AND he's never even TOUCHED a log. I currently have a powerlifting coach, bruh. (There is nothing wrong with being self taught! But when I literally pay a licensed professional, maybe chill with the unsolicited opinions.) And literally anyone who says "aren't you worried you'll hurt yourself?" when I mention I signed up for my first competition. Shut up! Let me be excited you doofuses!

I think I've also seen stones used, but I don't follow crossfit very thoroughly so I can't say for certain.

I've found that cross training on one day helps keep me fresh mentally and more resilient to injury. I've done CrossFit, ice hockey and bicycling over the decades, and they have all brought their own benefits to my running. I'm 52, and currently I play ice hockey 1x a week, and bike 1x a week.
